There is often a major misunderstanding regarding the amount of work required to install EV charging in a condominium compared to a single-family home. In many condo buildings, the infrastructure was not designed to support EV charging, which requires additional planning and coordination.
Some associations allow owners to install a new panel in the building’s electrical room at the owner’s expense. Other associations require power to be pulled from the owner’s main electrical panel inside the unit all the way to the parking space below. This can require x-raying concrete floors and ceilings, concrete removal, significant drywall repair, and coordination with neighboring units to properly drill and route wiring through shared structural areas.
Single-family homes typically allow for a more straightforward installation. Many homes have attic access for routing new wiring, and older homes often have electrical panels located directly in the garage, making EV charger installations much simpler and more cost-effective.
