Pool electrical systems can be complex, especially when installing a new pool, and proper planning is critical for safety and code compliance. Electrical service is evaluated to ensure it is sufficient for added equipment such as pool pumps and pool heaters, and required transformers and junction boxes are installed in preparation for pool lighting. Pool light installation is most commonly completed by the pool builder for new pools or by a pool service technician for existing pools. Proper bonding of the pool and associated equipment is critical for safety; during construction, a bonding conductor is connected to the pool shell and tied into the pool pump, heater, and related equipment to reduce the risk of accidental shock. If an existing pool structure does not have a bonding conductor present, the correct procedure is to do nothing. Installing a ground rod near the pool equipment and using it as a substitute bond is not acceptable and can create a potential safety hazard under certain conditions.
