Recessed can lighting offers a clean, modern look while providing functional and accent lighting throughout the home. Recessed cans are most commonly available in standard 4” and 6” diameters, allowing flexibility based on ceiling height, room size, and desired light output. Different trim styles and housing depths allow for flexibility depending on ceiling construction, truss layout, and desired appearance.

Types of Recessed Cans

LED Retrofit Recessed Lights
LED retrofit recessed lighting trims are a great way to upgrade existing recessed cans without replacing the entire housing. Retrofits provide a clean, finished look while also reducing energy consumption and improving overall light quality.

Flat Recessed Cans
Flat recessed cans are designed to fit virtually anywhere on the ceiling, regardless of truss location. With an ultra-slim profile typically around 1/2” deep, they can be installed directly under trusses where traditional recessed cans cannot fit. They are ideal for tight ceiling spaces and remodel applications and are commonly considered a builder-grade solution. Flat recessed cans use an integrated LED design, meaning if one light fails, the entire fixture must be replaced.

Regressed Recessed Lights
Regressed recessed lights sit deeper in the ceiling compared to flat recessed cans, creating a more refined and performance-driven lighting solution. The recessed light source helps reduce glare and typically allows for a more powerful light output with better control. These fixtures require specific spacing between trusses, and adjustments are often necessary to achieve the desired look and avoid truss interference. They use an integrated LED design, requiring full fixture replacement if one fails.

Traditional Recessed Cans
Traditional recessed cans provide the most flexibility in appearance, serviceability, and long-term options. They have significantly deeper housings and require specific spacing between trusses. Adjustments are usually necessary to achieve the desired layout and avoid structural framing. Traditional cans accept standard light bulbs or LED trims, allowing homeowners to replace bulbs or trims without replacing the entire fixture. They offer the widest range of trim styles and finished looks.
